What is a Patient Group Direction?

A Patient Group Direction (PGD) is a legal framework that allows specified registered health professionals to supply and/or administer a medicine to pre-defined groups of patients, without a prescription. PGDs are governed by the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 and must be authorised by an appropriate body before use.

Who Uses PGDs?

NHS Trusts, community health services, ambulance services, pharmacies, and other healthcare organisations use PGDs to enable timely access to medicines in settings such as vaccination clinics, emergency departments, and community care.

Why Are They Important?

PGDs improve patient access to treatment by removing the need for an individual prescription. Robust governance ensures patient safety through defined inclusion/exclusion criteria, staff authorisation, and competency assessment.

The Governance Challenge

Managing PGDs on paper or spreadsheets is error-prone. Tracking expiry dates, staff authorisations, competency sign-offs and administration records across multiple sites is complex and carries significant clinical risk.
